Boat Level

A Boat Level is more commonly called a scaffolders level. It is used in building bricks or blocks, to level the first block on every course on a corner and as you build the corners first level and line between them. This is a small level about 10 inches long, Stabilla make a magnetic Boat Level, which is of a very high quality. The magnetic base allows it to stick in place allowing you free hands to get on with your work. Alternative models have adjustable screws on the base or you can just balance the cheaper models on some screws on a block of wood.

A boat level is simply a type of ’spirit level’ usually with three bubble chambers; horizontal, vertical and 45 degree angle. The boat level gets its name from its shape, which, in plan form, is that of a boat. Maintenance wise; simply keep your boat level clean and dry and try not to drop it or break the bubble chambers as it is expensive to buy the bubbles these days! Usually they are extremely hard wearing and very little you can do to them to cause them to break. If however, your boat level did get damaged, then you would be advised to just throw it away and buy a new one.
