Training as a Bricklayer is a sensible and opportunistic decision. Bricklaying is one of the most recognised construction disciplines. Bricklayers are constantly in demand and therefore potential earnings, through self-employment, can become substantial.

As a bricklayer you will mainly be working outside, and quite often at heights above 2 Metres. You will work in many locations so a willingness to travel is preferred. You will need to be able to work well as part of a team, be reliable, honest and have a good work ethic. Also you must be prepared to be flexible in you working arrangements.

Although the duties of a Bricklayer are mostly manual, to get ahead in the field, particularly as a self-employed Bricklayer, there will always be the requirement to price jobs by reading and understanding technical drawings and architectural paperwork. Therefore, a basic level of Numeracy and Literacy is essential.

A Bricklaying college course is between 18months and 2 years in duration, but a full Bricklaying apprenticeship with an established firm of Bricklayers or Building Contractors will take four years. This is four years well worth completing as it will set you on a path to a brighter future.

If you are not in the Bricklaying trade but wish to gain the basic bricklaying skills required to undertake simple brickwork tasks, then there are numerous courses going on across the country which teach the basics in a matter of days, or weeks. These are fine for people wanting to gain an understanding of basic bricklaying or for Bricklaying DIY but these do not qualify you as a Bricklayer established to sub-contract.
