A bolster is a steel chisel like tool used for cutting bricks and chipping hard concrete surfaces. A bolster is used for cutting bricks. It is important that cover protection is worn at all times over your eyes, whilst using a bolster, because splinters of brick could fly into your eye and blind you.

The end of the handle should not be allowed to burr over, after repeated hammering. This is known as a mushroom and can splinter when being hit. The handle end should be kept free from mushrooms by a grinding wheel which can also be used to keep the cutting edge sharp.
